Choosing Your Domain NameYour domain name (e.g. www.yoursite.co.uk) is your identity on the internet so here are some tips to help you with choosing yours. Short and sweet Bearing in mind that your users will need to be able to remember and easily type your domain name into their internet browsers its best to try and keep your domain name as short as possible while still being relevant to and recognisable as your business. Ingredients Domain names can only contain letters and numbers, so no spaces or other symbols, and don’t worry about capital letters as domains names are not case sensitive. Your domain name can also include hyphens but its generally better to try and find a domain name without using these. Dot what? There are lots of different domain name extensions available right now so it can be hard deciding which one is right for you and your business. If you are based and operating within the UK the domain extension .co.uk is the preferred option, whereas if you operate worldwide (whether based in the UK or otherwise) we recommend using the .com suffix. Protect your investment Once you have decided on your domain name (e.g. www.yoursite.co.uk) it is worthwhile buying up the other main TLDs (Top Level Domains) for your chosen name (e.g. www.yoursite.com and www.yoursite.net) as they are relatively inexpensive and it ensures that no one else can come along and capitalise on your brand name in the future by registering them. Avoid trademarked names You should avoid registering domain names which contain other well known businesses brand names or trademarks as rather than attracting customers this practice tends to attract said companies lawyers instead.
