Website Term GlossaryWe understand that the internet and websites are new to many of our clients so we have put together the following glossary explaining some of the terms you are likely to come across during your websites development. Content: The information which is displayed within a web page. This can include text, images, graphics, photographs, audio, video etc. Copy: The written text for each of your website pages. Domain Name: A Domain Name is the website address which identifies a website (for example ours is graphx.co.uk), this address is what a person would type into their web browser to view your website. Domain names are available with a variety of extensions such as .co.uk, .com, .net, .org, .biz and .mobi to name but a few. Take a look at our guide choosing your domain name for more information. Email: Email (Electronic Mail) refers to messages sent from one person to others over the internet. Email Address: The address (e.g. you@yoursite.co.uk) used for sending and receiving emails. Home Page: The main (top-level) page of a website. This is the default page displayed when you visit a website. Javascript: Javascript is a scripting language which allows your website to have certain added features and functionality. Navigation Bar/Menu: The Navigation Bar/Menu of a website is the collection of links usually placed horizontally near the top or vertically to the left of a web page, which help visitors navigate through a website. For example our website has its navigation bar horizontally at the top of each web page (ours has the following links (pages): Home, Web Design, Our Work, Extras, Get a Quote, Guides and Contact Us). Page: We use the term PAGE to describe each unique area of a website, for example on this website we have the following PAGES: Home, Web Design, Our Work, Extras, Get a Quote, Guides and Contact Us (which you can see in our navigation bar at the top of the page). Each unique page can contain "sub-pages" and still be considered 1 page, this is something we discuss with all our clients during the web design process. PDF: PDF (Portable Document Format) is a file format developed by Adobe which is used to create electronic documents which can be viewed by others. Search Engine: A search engine is an internet service which searches and indexes (catalogs) online content allowing users to locate and use it. Common search engines are Google, Yahoo and Bing. Web Browser: A software program used to present information from the internet to a user such as yourself (it is what you are using to view this page now). Web Hosting: Web Hosting refers to the service that stores your websites files and makes them available to internet users. In most cases your web hosting provider is also the same service that provides you with your emails and email addresses (e.g. you@yoursite.co.uk) for your website. Webmail: Webmail is a service which allows users to send and receive by logging in to a control panel online rather than by using a program stored on their computer. The main benefit of webmail is that you are able to access your emails from any computer with an internet connection anywhere in the world. Website Optimisation: Website optimisation is the practice of refining the content of a website to make it more readable by and help it rank well in the search engines. Website Statistics: Website statistics refers to a piece of software which collects and displays information regarding the activity of the users of your website helping you to better understand your users and how they navigate to and around your website, it presents you with lots of information such as the number of visitors to your site, page views and the search terms your visitors used via search engines to find your website. |
